Director
Stop Suicide Northeast Indiana
Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States
Colleen Carpenter MA, MPH is the Director of Stop Suicide Northeast Indiana, an alliance of key stakeholders who seek to raise awareness and take action to stop suicide. Besides managing grants and overseeing the daily functions of the coalition, she spends her time on three data-driven initiatives: 1) Team BLISS: A Black youth suicide participatory action research project; 2) Exploring how to build connectedness and belonging among 20-44 year olds, and; 3) Action Over Silence, a new suicide prevention project to reduce suicide among service members, veterans, their families and caregivers. Additionally, through Colleen Carpenter Consulting LLC (CCC), she provides evidence-based training and targeted consultation to build long-term capacity to prevent suicide and improve mental wellness. CCC's mission is to help organizations and communities tighten their safety nets so that people who are struggling with suicide and mental health issues are identified and helped. Colleen is active on numerous local and state-level mental health and suicide-related groups, including Indiana Suicide Prevention Network’s advisory board. In 2004, Colleen was Indiana’s first state suicide prevention coordinator helping communities implement the state's first state suicide prevention plan and in 2008 was the Program Director for Indiana's first Garrett Lee Memorial Act youth suicide prevention grant. She has master’s degrees from Loyola University Chicago (sociology) and the University of North Carolina (public health). She has won local and national awards for her work in suicide prevention. She is also a survivor of her Uncle John’s suicide.
