Glendale, California, United States
Joseph "Joey" Belsan (he/they) is a graduate student at the University of Southern California pursuing both a Master of Nonprofit Leadership and Management and a Graduate Certificate in Public Policy. His research addresses health inequities among marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQIA+ youth in rural settings. Joey recently completed a Master of Science in Health Administration at Northern Kentucky University. He currently serves as a crisis line supervisor at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services' Suicide Prevention Center in Los Angeles, one of the nation's leading crisis centers.
An Ohio native, Joey graduated in 2021 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Joey is thrilled to return to Columbus, Ohio, to attend the 2025 American Association of Suicidology Conference.
As both a frontline worker and researcher, Joey's experience uniquely positions him to understand the complexities of suicide prevention work. His research is significantly driven by his lived experiences with suicide, suicide loss, and health inequities. Joey aims to erase stigma surrounding suicide and mental health care while advancing suicide prevention through strategic policy and nonprofit initiatives. He incorporates his personal experiences, when appropriate, to demonstrate a strong commitment to openly discussing, learning about, and preventing suicide. Joey looks forward to sharing his work and learning from others at the conference.
