Psychometric Evaluation of the Korean Version of Crisis Self-Efficacy Index (Board#22)

Abstract :

Aims: Crisis self-efficacy reflects an individual's belief that they can effectively manage crises through their own abilities, making it a key factor in predicting behavior during emergencies. For efforts to strengthen crisis response capabilities to be successful, it is essential to accurately assess individuals' preparedness and improve response behaviors accordingly. Therefore, developing a reliable assessment tool in South Korea has become increasingly necessary. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Crisis Self-Efficacy Index (K-CSI) as a measure of self-efficacy in crisis situations.

Methods: The K-CSI was developed following the translation steps suggested by Sousa and Rojjanasrirat (2011): (1) forward translation by bilingual translators, (2) comparison and synthesis by a third independent translator, (3) blind back translation by two bilingual translators, (4) assessment of semantic equivalence by the original authors, and (5) review of the K-CSI for accuracy and consistency in the Korean cultural context by a multidisciplinary committee composed of experts in Korean literature, nursing, and social work. To analyze psychometric properties, data were collected from 230 adults aged 18 to 65 residing in South Korea. The underlying factor structure and model fit were examined using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion validity was assessed using the General Self-Efficacy Scale and the Social Desirability Scale-9 (SDS-9).

Results: The internal consistency of the K-CSI was found to be reliable, with a Cronbach's alpha of .953. Additionally, the K-CSI demonstrated significant positive correlations with the General Self-Efficacy Scale (r=.635, p<.001) and the SDS-9 (r=.182, p=.006), supporting its criterion validity. The K-CSI was refined from the original 12 items to 11 items through exploratory factor analysis, resulting in a three-factor structure: Action Efficacy, Preventive Efficacy, and Achievement and Coping Efficacy. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable model fit (CFI=.954, TLI=.938, RMSEA=.105, SRMR=.033).

Conclusions: The results of this study are significant, as they demonstrate the applicability of the K-CSI in assessing self-efficacy in crisis situations among Koreans. This measurement is expected to contribute to research on self-efficacy in crisis situations and to have practical applications in clinical settings in Korea.
